Discipline - a skill that gets better with practice

If you ask anyone on the street what comes to their mind when they hear the word discipline, they will more likely tell you about punishment. Do you associate discipline only with punishment and correction? You need to consider discipline in another light. Let us put it this way, without discipline it would be hard to accomplish goals in life, acquire property, compete in sports, pass exams, lose weight, etc. If you want to succeed, you need to have this skill.

The Encarta dictionary defines discipline as conscious control over lifestyle. When it comes to “financial discipline’ it involves living within your means and resisting the urge to add extra expenses that are not within your budget. It will involve saving, investing and making the most out of every shilling. Like any other discipline it is hard at first, but once you get used, it becomes rewarding.

So where do you start? Like any other habit, it is always easier to develop a habit when you're young as opposed to when you're older. Here are a few tips to get you started:

·         Remember that practice makes perfect. Practice! Practice! Practice!  It may take a while but it will get better as you go along

·         Make a list of your income sources. This may include the support you get from your parents/guardians or bursary and school loans. If you usually work over the holidays or have a business, you can also include the income you get.

·         Make a list of your expenses (budget).
